This three movement work for solo flute and piano shows the extremities of range and timbral contrasts between the instruments. Thanks to a commission from the EXPO: New Music Competition, I wrote this work for flutist Ji Young Kim. At the beginning of a very uncertain year, 2020, I was paired to live with Ji Young and our friendship fostered the music you will hear tonight. Her personality is lively and bubbly and the music is frantic and energetic to mirror this. As international students who could not travel home, Ji Young and I were there to catch each other on these drastic highs and lows. This piece highlights the importance of friendship through unstable, dark times, uncovering the promise that is on the horizon.
