Many years ago, growing up as a child in Wales, I came across the work of Alex Echo. I still remember the day my parents were looking for an eye-catching piece of art that was full of color and energy but one that you could look at everyday and feel as though you are looking at it for the first time.
They returned with an Alex Echo: it was one of the most colourful and captivating pieces of art I have ever seen, engraved with a special message for me after they told him that I was a composer. Alex was fascinated with music and spent countlesstimes in NYC ,sitting on the grass at Lincoln Center soaking up inspiration for his pieces, watching the students go in and out of The Juilliard building. He recently transitioned to digital art work and after putting together the series of images, Journa |BeingHere |and Portrait, these seemed like the most perfect collection of work to craft the concerto around. I was so lucky to be able to speak with Alex Echo over the past few months and I am so thrilled that he has been so supportive of this new collaborative partnership. Each of the movements captures Alex and I’s shared experience of the New York City energy. The paintings give the perfect opportunity to create more tumultuous textures in the first movement, time halting phrases in the second and a rapturous patchwork approach in the third. Alex's work is like an instant spark; you look at it and the ideas flow. It has been wonderful to partner with someone with such electric synergy.
