The Dawning, originally commissioned by Rhose Studio Strings is a work of many characters. Having grown up in the beautiful green countryside of Wales (UK), I wanted to create a work that evokes the landscape of home. The result is a pastoral sound, in some ways reminiscent of Vaughan-Williams, the composer that brought Rhose Studio Strings together. The work weaves together folk-like melodies that move in parallel motion creating a sense of stillness and calm before slowly building to energetic, lilting passages. Having had the pleasure of living the past few years in New York City, I have absorbed huge influence from Jazz which encourages me to experiment with stacked, colourful chords. In some ways, this piece function as a concerto grosso as the tunes are passed around all of the voices; there is no hierarchy amongst the parts as everyone gets a moment to shine. The title, The Dawning, captures the feel of a calming, dark beginning, that grows like sunlight into the brightness of daytime.
