Written for Bronwyn Schuman in 2021, this piece translates a very important message. Deeply inspired by the novel, ‘How Green is my Valley’ by Richard Llewellyn, Ms. Schuman requested a composition based on themes and elements from the book. As I dove deep into the story line, the character of Bronwyn fascinated me. Intelligent with boundless potential, instead Bronwyn follows the traditional pathway of becoming a wife. Whilst she tries to be content with this, the audience sees a glimmer of the sadness she feels as her future is taken away from her. Set in South Wales during the reign of Queen Victoria, married women were forced to live a life focused on bearing children and preparing food and the house for their family. They did not have the same rights as men to education. The piece portrays Bronwyn’s feelings after the wedding: gentle, hopeful and beautiful but with elements of melancholy, sadness and darkness.
